Longmont is a Home Rule Municipality in Boulder and Weld counties of the U.S. state of Colorado. Longmont is located northeast of the county seat of Boulder and 33 miles (53 km) north-northwest of the Colorado State Capitol in Denver.

Longmont's population was 98,885 at the 2020 U.S. Census. Longmont is the 13th most populous city in Colorado. The word "Longmont" comes from Longs Peak, a prominent mountain named for explorer Stephen H. Long that is clearly visible from Longmont, and "mont", from the French word for mountain.

Geography

Longmont is located in northeastern Boulder County at 40°10′18″N 105°06′33″W. The city extends slightly into western Weld County. It is 32 miles (51 km) northwest of Denver, 13 miles (21 km) north of Boulder and 37 miles (60 km) south of Fort Collins.

According to the United States Census Bureau, Longmont has a total area of 27.60 square miles (71.48 km2), of which 26.37 square miles (68.29 km2) is land and 1.23 square miles (3.19 km2), or 4.45%, is water. The major rivers and streams in Longmont include the St. Vrain Creek and Left Hand Creek.
